Ballad of Reading Gaol

Yet each man kills the thing he loves

By each let this be heard,

Some do it with a bitter look,

Some with a flattering word,

The coward does it with a kiss,

The brave man with a sword!

Some kill their love when they are young,

And some when they are old;

Some strangle with the hands of Lust,

Some with the hands of Gold:

The kindest use a knife, because

The dead so soon grow cold.

Some love too little, some too long,

Some sell, and others buy;

Some do the deed with many tears,

And some without a sigh:

For each man kills the thing he loves,

Yet each man does not die.

Beautifully rendered “Jan Gana Mana”. The people of Kenya do it for India

the unbearable lightness of being

“Being” is full of “unbearable lightness” because each of us has only one life to live.
Therefore, each life is ultimately insignificant;
Every decision ultimately does not matter.
Since decisions do not matter, they are “light”: they do not tie us down.
But at the same time, the insignificance of our decisions - our lives, or being - is unbearable.
Hence, “the unbearable lightness of being”.

staying connected

Well, yesterday was diwali the day was busy Pooja in office, Buying bangers for Party, Lunch with friends, and yes it was a week day.. so all the firefighting of ofiice.

Evening after the pooja & the bangers, I sat with few gentlemen in my complex (first time in 2 yrs… usually I out to my friends .. or doing somthing alone).

As all of us are working the talk turns to Impression of Nigeria in India, and moves to hectic pace of life, and I had stong views on so called “Staying Connected”

  1. Mobile Phones: Strictly after observation I still cant understand
    • why you need to call people in your family (parents) everyday
    • why do you need to check on your partner every 3 hrs
    • does having 5 conversations about trivial things like, whats cooking, what show on TV, what the latest news
    • and dont ask about young parents, they dont want their kids to even think, its almost a crime it they do anything without refering to parents, and more often than not its becoming a two way process ie parents not doing anything without asking the kids
  2. Online connectivity: Now this is more of personal experience
    • Email: is the best Creativity Killing tool, the reason being “you can never finish a clear line of thought when you most need it BECAUSE an email lands in-between
    • CC: is Bad, its compulsivefor most people to have point of view, else they feel they are not adding value
    • BCC:Even worse,if people know somone does BCC then its twice more compulsive to respond
    • CHAT: more addictive that smoking (i’m on both chat and smoking), actually makes nobody feel better, whether you did it or not
    • In all the above creativity is moving out of “Business Offices” to the so called consultants

Now turn the clock 10 year back, we were not so connected, we used to write letters (an art very clearly losing, but being replaced by blogs).

Think of it 15 yrs back, people lived without mobile phones.

I’m not for or against any technology or gadget want to know where this “Staying Connected” trend is going.

My hunch, its oly going to increase (look at social networking).

So more mails/phone calls/Chat in the coming days.
